At 9:30am on the morning of Sunday, May 31st on the East Coast, most Kissito employees were heading off to church, enjoying breakfast with their family or just arising from a good night’s sleep while two members of the executive management team found themselves at the west end of Balboa Park in San Diego, California ready for the start of the 2009 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.
Mike Yates, Chief Financial Officer, and Angie Mattocks, Chief Nursing Officer, were in San Diego for the Amity Fellowserve, Inc. Board of Directors Symposium on Saturday and transitioned from their role on the board to that of a runner, donning their running shoes to participate in Sunday’s event.
Longer races are nothing new for Yates having run three trail runs; however, this was his first street race. It’s a different story for Mattocks who found herself facing the challenge of her first marathon ever.
In addition to managing their day to day roles at Kissito, Yates and Mattocks, both having families to care for as well, also demonstrated the determination needed to prepare for the marathon, having started their training months ago. Mattocks, admitting to being the least physically fit of the group, joined the gym in November 2008 and began with smaller workouts. Two months prior to race day, Mattocks “got serious” and took her workouts outdoors to get the feel of the differences of various inclines. With the help of her husband and friends, all thrilled with her commitment to participate, she received the necessary encouragement and workout partners to propel her confidence leading up to race day.
When asked about what completing the marathon meant to her, Mattocks was able to relate to the patients. “As a first time marathoner, completing the entire 26.2 miles was a tremendous physical and mental challenge. As a healthcare professional working in the rehabilitation field, many of our patients face similar challenges everyday as they struggle to recover from illness or injury. This experience will help me to empathize with the day to day challenges our patients face, and I hope to use this experience to be a better healthcare provider.”
Yates, 35, finished the 26.2 mile race in 6 hours, 6 minutes, and 21 seconds while Mattocks, 43, completed her inaugural run in 6 hours, 53 minutes, and 42 seconds. Both are to be commended for their hard work and determination not only for participating in the marathon but for their role at Kissito Healthcare.
While Yates and Mattocks were the only two of the executive management team to participate in this particular marathon, as a whole the team has completed over 20 races in their life time, the majority by President & CEO, Tom Clarke.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is a 26.2 mile race starting in downtown San Diego finishing in a secured area at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Point Loma. Its twelfth year in existence, over 13,000 completed the marathon.
